President Cyril Ramaphosa recently visited the Sekhukhune District at the Motodi Sports Complex in Limpopo Province. This marked the eighth successful Presidential Imbizo under the current administration, reflecting a clear commitment to community engagement and development.
A pivotal aspect of the President’s visit was his inspection of the R37 Driekop – Steelpoort Interchange road project. Upon completion, the project will efficiently connect the District to Polokwane, Limpopo’s capital city, and foster economic growth. This initiative forms part of a larger road infrastructure rollout throughout the province.
The Imbizo followed a series of build-up activities featuring various Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Mayors, and government agencies, who assessed progress on service delivery projects across the four local municipalities constituting Sekhukhune District Municipality.
Joined by an entourage of Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Acting Premier of Limpopo, Mayors, Limpopo Members of Executive Council, and traditional leaders from the district, President Ramaphosa engaged in meaningful discussions with community members and business organizations at the Motodi Sports Complex.
Throughout these interactions, critical issues were brought to the forefront, including water shortages, unemployment, illegal mining, and the scarcity of higher education centers in the area.
Addressing the water crisis, President Ramaphosa invited Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr. Senzo Mchunu, to provide an update on the situation. Mchunu expressed concern about the rollover of funds allocated for water projects and unveiled a R12 billion initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing water shortages. He further assured that the Department of Water and Sanitation would collaborate closely with local authorities and the mining sector on this endeavor.
President Ramaphosa reassured the community of the government’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will strengthen its collaboration with law enforcement agencies and engage with relevant stakeholders on mining-related issues in the district. He also emphasized the importance of active community participation in local economic activities.
The President expressed his gratitude to the residents of Sekhukhune District for their significant attendance at the Imbizo and their proactive approach to addressing their challenges. He commended the mining companies for their cooperative efforts with the government and acknowledged the valuable contribution of a youth representative who underscored the crucial role young people play in uplifting their communities.
Through President Cyril Ramaphosa’s eighth Imbizo, the government’s dedication to fostering communication, collaboration, and progress is abundantly clear. By addressing critical issues and working closely with communities, the current administration continues to pave the way for a brighter future for all South Africans.
