Global Biodiversity Framework in South Africa

South Africa is committed to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. The country has adopted the Global Biodiversity Framework, which mandates the preservation of 30% of land and sea by 2030. Additionally, there is a need to create economic opportunities for communities living near conservation estates.

The role of the private sector

The private sector has a critical role to play in protecting biodiversity. South African businesses must adopt sustainable practices and work closely with the government to enforce environmental regulations. The country is participating in the Global Environmental Facility project, which aims to engage businesses in developing government-led action plans on biodiversity.

Nature-Related Risks and Opportunities Study

South Africa has developed its first study on nature-related risks and opportunities to meet its reporting obligations under Target 15 of the GBF. The study will aid in biodiversity conservation efforts and guide policy-making.

Building Back Biodiversity for Future Generations

With the support of various stakeholders, South Africa can make significant progress in preserving biodiversity. By collaborating with the private sector, enforcing environmental regulations, and investing in sustainable practices, the country can protect its unique ecosystems and the species that depend on them for future generations.
