Remembering the Legacy of Professor Dan Kgwadi

The academic and educational community is in mourning following the passing of Professor Dan Kgwadi, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Vaal University of Technology. Professor Kgwadi’s contributions to the educational sector and his positive impact on the lives of many will forever be celebrated.

A Dedicated Leader and Passionate Educator

Professor Dan Kgwadi was a dedicated leader with an impressive educational background and a passion for academic excellence, community service, and empowering underprivileged youth. He served as the first Rector of the North-West University, Mafikeng Campus. He was also the former North-West University (NWU) Vice-Chancellor and Principal, where he made significant contributions to the transformation of the campus and established partnerships locally and internationally.

Acknowledging Professor Kgwadi’s Contributions

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation Dr. Blade Nzimande expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Kgwadi family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Vaal University of Technology community for the loss of such an esteemed individual. Minister Nzimande acknowledged Professor Dan Kgwadi’s commitment to academic excellence, community services, and partnerships with the public and industry. He also emphasized that the professor’s dedication, along with other university administrators and academics, has contributed to the enrollment of over 1.12 million students in the university system.

Advancements in Education

The government has also made strides to increase representation and improve retention of black and women academics through the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP). In addition, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has provisionally funded 1.08 million students from working-class and poor backgrounds, with plans to finalize a new Comprehensive Student Funding Model in 2024.

Honoring Professor Kgwadi’s Legacy

Professor Dan Kgwadi’s legacy will continue to shine a light for future generations. The Vaal University of Technology works closely with the family to organize the memorial service and funeral details. His contributions to the educational sector inspire many, and his dedication to academic excellence and community service will never be forgotten.
