Cape Town’s Table View beachfront, a top tourist attraction along the Atlantic coastline, is getting a major facelift to enhance its beauty and functionality. The City of Cape Town is investing in a significant upgrade project to improve a 3km stretch of coastline from Dolphin Beach to Bokkomsbaai. The project will encompass the rehabilitation of dune systems, construction of a new walkway, and upgrades to parking areas and ablution facilities, set to begin mid-September.
Table View beachfront offers a stunning view of Table Mountain, making it a popular destination for both tourists and locals. The beach is also a famous kite-surfing spot, adding to its allure. The City of Cape Town is committed to protecting and improving its natural assets, which is why the upgrade project began with the rehabilitation of the dune system last year.
Starting mid-September, the construction of a new 2km walkway from Bokkomsbaai to Marine Circle will provide seamless access for visitors. Walkways have gained popularity as they offer a safe environment for recreation, away from traffic, and allow people of all ages to connect with the outdoors. Additionally, new ablution facilities will be constructed, and parking areas will undergo upgrades and reconfigurations.
The entire project is scheduled for completion in June 2025 and will be executed in phases to minimize inconvenience to residents and visitors. The City of Cape Town’s Deputy Mayor, Alderman Eddie Andrews, expressed his gratitude for the local community’s support and assured that public access to the beach would be maintained throughout the project’s duration.
The new walkway will be complemented by the restoration of an existing 1km walkway from Marine Circle to Dolphin Beach, enabling visitors to enjoy a safe and uninterrupted walk along the coastline.
New ablution facilities will be constructed between Shell and Seal Roads, as well as adjacent to the parking area south of Marine Circle. Existing ablutions will also undergo refurbishment to ensure visitor comfort. Parking areas, sidewalks, and sections of Beach Boulevard will be affected by the work, but beach access will always remain open for visitors.
To accommodate the new walkway, parking areas along the coast will be reconfigured, and a new parking area will be created opposite Visagie Street. Moreover, additional parking bays will be added at Bokkomsbaai, and new parking facilities will be provided within a reasonable radius of popular areas with high parking demand.
The dune rehabilitation project plays a crucial role in mitigating the impact of windblown sand on adjacent infrastructure, such as parking areas. The project includes the installation of wind nets and vegetation, with sand being pushed back into the sea as needed. Planting will continue into 2024, with vegetation expected to take several years to establish fully.
With ongoing work, the public is reminded to keep dogs on leads, adhere to the on-site signage, and access the beach only through designated pathways.
