Security Guards in South Africa Arrested for Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunition

In a recent incident in Emalahleni, South Africa, two security guards were arrested for the possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition. The arrest was made by Visible Policing officers who noticed a suspicious white Toyota Etios during a routine patrol in Witbank.

Suspicious Vehicle Leads to Arrest

The officers observed the vehicle overtaking them at high speed without any front or rear number plates, which raised their suspicions. They approached and stopped the car, conducted a search of the vehicle and its occupants, and discovered two magazines containing ammunition for a rifle.

Firearms Unearthed in Search

Following the discovery of ammunition, the officers conducted further investigation, leading to the discovery of two AK-47 rifles and four ZM rifles inside the vehicle. A total of 136 live rounds were found.

Suspects Identified as Security Guards

Despite identifying themselves as security guards, the suspects were taken into custody for illegal possession of firearms. The investigation revealed that four of the rifles had expired licenses, making the suspects unlawfully in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The AK-47 rifles were also considered prohibited firearms, leading to their arrest and subsequent charges.

Continued Investigation and Community Involvement

The confiscated firearms will undergo ballistic testing, which may lead to additional charges being laid against the suspects if they are found to have been previously used in criminal activities. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, praised the officers for their hard work in apprehending the suspects and emphasized the importance of community involvement in providing information on criminal activities.

SAPS Successes in Combating Crime

General Manamela highlighted the previous successes of the SAPS, such as the arrest of two suspects with two AK-47 rifles and 266 rounds of ammunition on the N12 Road near Ogies off-ramp. These arrests serve as a reminder of the determination and commitment of the SAPS in combating crime in the region.

Support and Cooperation of the Community

The support and cooperation of the community are essential in assisting the police in their efforts to maintain safety and order. The SAPS remains highly motivated to continue fighting crime in the province and encourages community members to provide information that can aid in their efforts.
