Seeking Experienced Members to Serve and Protect Consumers

The Western Cape Consumer Affairs Tribunal is seeking nominations for experienced individuals to serve as its members. The Tribunal aims to ensure fairness in transactions between consumers and businesses and to protect consumer rights. The Provincial Minister of Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, emphasizes the importance of consumer protection for both businesses and consumers.

The Importance of Consumer Protection

Consumer protection is crucial for businesses and consumers. Consumers need accurate and unbiased information to make informed decisions about the products and services they purchase. Businesses that treat consumers fairly and responsibly will ultimately increase their profitability and competitiveness.

The Role of the Tribunal

The Tribunal offers free services to Western Cape citizens and regulates transactions between consumers and businesses fairly. Its processes are more user-friendly than standard court proceedings. The Office of the Consumer Protector offers alternative dispute resolution services, but the Tribunal holds the power to investigate, prohibit, and control unfair business practices.

The Need for Experienced Members

While many disputes can be resolved amicably, some require the intervention of the Consumer Affairs Tribunal. The Tribunal will consist of four members, including a designated chairperson. The chairperson must be a retired High Court judge or possess a minimum of ten years of experience as an attorney, advocate, retired magistrate, or university lecturer. Other members should have expertise in consumer advocacy, economics, industry, or commerce.

Nomination Process

Nominations are open until August 31, 2023. Nominees must submit a written nomination and comprehensive curriculum vitae. Nominees will undergo a thorough vetting process, including certification of qualifications, work experience, criminal history, financial standing, and other relevant matters.

Contact Information

Nominations can be sent to the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, addressed to Adv A Searle, Director: Office of Consumer Protector. Potential candidates can also hand-deliver their nominations to the reception desk at the Ground Floor, Waldorf Building, in Cape Town or email them to Buyile.Nopote@westerncape.gov.za. For inquiries, Mr. Buyile Nopote can be contacted at (021) 483-9411 / 073 108 0947.

Establishing the Western Cape Consumer Affairs Tribunal highlights the province’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and fostering a fair and transparent marketplace. By attracting experienced and skilled individuals to serve as its members, the Tribunal will play a crucial role in upholding ethical business practices and promoting informed decision-making among consumers. As a result, both businesses and consumers stand to benefit from a more equitable and responsible commercial environment.
