South Africa and Kazakhstan have been working towards building a strong relationship, and the recent visit by Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms. Candith Mashego-Dlamini, to Astana, Kazakhstan, from June 6-9, 2023, is a testament to this.
Ms. Mashego-Dlamini’s visit to Kazakhstan also included participation in the Astana International Forum (AIF), which is a platform for global stakeholders to address pressing issues such as climate change, energy security, and food scarcity. The forum aims to generate innovative solutions and encourage international collaboration.
The visit also included co-chairing the Seventh Session of Political Consultations with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Africa and Asia, Mr. Kanant Tumysh. The meeting aimed to review progress since the last meeting and explore opportunities for further cooperation, including people-to-people cooperation, skills development, technological transfers, science and technology, mining, agriculture, and energy.
Over the years, economic relations between South Africa and Kazakhstan have grown steadily, with bilateral trade estimated at over R2 billion. South African imports to Kazakhstan encompass a variety of products such as machinery, chemical appliances, mining equipment, and products from chemical or allied industries. A range of bilateral agreements in diverse fields, including economic cooperation, immigration, and justice, are currently under consideration.
