South Africa and Vietnam: A Strong and Enduring Relationship

The relationship between South Africa and Vietnam has endured for 30 years, a testament to the power of solidarity and shared values. As the two countries commemorate their 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2023, it is an opportune time to reflect on their past, present, and future collaboration.

A Shared History of Struggle and Resilience

The foundation of the South Africa-Vietnam relationship lies in their shared struggle against colonialism and racial discrimination. As nations that have both endured subjugation and fought for independence, they found common ground in their resilience and commitment to self-determination. This historical context laid the groundwork for the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between South Africa and Vietnam in December 1993.

A Multifaceted Bond

Over the past three decades, the partnership has evolved into a multifaceted bond, characterized by frequent interactions between their governments, strong people-to-people links, and robust collaboration in several areas. South Africa and Vietnam have enjoyed high-level visits from one another’s government officials, which have further solidified their ties. Recent visits by South African ministers have helped consolidate their bilateral relations in sectors such as energy, mineral resources, and higher education, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trade and Investment

Vietnam holds the position of South Africa’s 5th largest trading partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. The total bilateral trade between the two countries was valued at R23.8 billion in 2022, with plenty of scope for growth in sectors like agriculture, agro-processed products, and coal and minerals. South Africa has identified new investments as a crucial driver of economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction. Therefore, initiatives to enhance competitiveness, attract investment, and leverage technology and innovation are a priority.

Untapped Potential in Trade

One key area of untapped potential in the bilateral relationship lies in increased trade, particularly concerning South African exports. South Africa encourages Vietnam to take advantage of the support provided through the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement. This agreement aims to foster economic integration, investment, trade, and shared prosperity across the continent.

Strengthening and Opening Up New Opportunities

South Africa has expressed gratitude to Vietnam for its valuable assistance in securing the status of a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN. This achievement, approved by the ASEAN Ministers of Foreign Affairs in July, further strengthens their relationship and opens up new opportunities for collaboration in the region. Another area of shared interest between the two nations is their participation in the BRICS plus Dialogue meeting in August 2023.

A Promising Future

As South Africa and Vietnam continue to engage on various issues affecting their countries and explore opportunities for growth, the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic ties serves as both a celebration of their past and a harbinger of a promising future. The collaboration between these two nations has considerable mutual benefits, and both countries attach great importance to global engagements like the BRICS forum.
