South Africa sees quarter one GDP growth amidst economic obstacles

The recently published Quarterly Labour Force Survey results for the first quarter of 2023 indicate a significant rise in employment, with 258,000 new jobs added, bringing the total number of employed individuals to 16.2 million. This marks the sixth consecutive quarterly rise in employment figures.

South African industries experience positive growth

Statistics South Africa revealed that eight industries experienced positive growth from January to March 2023. Strong contributions came from the manufacturing, finance, personal services, transport, and trade sectors. Food and beverages led the way for the manufacturing industry, which was the largest contributor to the growth in economic output for the quarter.

Minister in the Presidency, Ms. Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, cautions against complacency and emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between optimism and an awareness of the economic challenges that still lie ahead.
