South Africa has sent a second team of highly skilled firefighters to assist Canada in the ongoing fight against the devastating wildfires in Alberta. The deployment comes after an urgent request was made by the Canadian Inter-agency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC). The South African team, named Mzanzi Hotshots 2, comprises 200 firefighters and 13 managers. They will work together with their Canadian counterparts to suppress the inferno that has already caused destruction and displacement across the region.
South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment’s Working on Fire Programme is facilitating the collaboration. The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2019, which provides for the exchange of wildland fire management resources. This is the fifth instance of cooperation between the two nations, highlighting the spirit of solidarity in the face of adversity.
The firefighters selected for the crucial task come with a wealth of experience and qualifications, boasting a minimum of three years of firefighting experience and training in Canadian pump operation techniques. Many team members have previously participated in international firefighting efforts, further strengthening their ability to confront complex fire situations.
South Africa’s Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Ms. Barbara Creecy, conveyed her best wishes to the Mzanzi Hotshots 2 team as they embark on their mission. She expressed her pride in the fact that South Africa is able to support Canadian firefighting teams and emphasized the extensive experience that these firefighters bring to the table.
The deployment of these skilled professionals will significantly contribute towards the effective suppression and management of the wildfires in Alberta, ultimately helping to protect lives, properties, and the environment. This collaboration is a shining example of how, together, we can overcome adversity and protect our shared environment and communities.
