South African and Chinese President Strengthen Relationship

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to host President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China for a State Visit on August 22nd. The meeting coincides with the 15th BRICS Summit and commemorates 25 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership governs their relationship, and the Ten-Year Strategic Programme of Cooperation (2020-2029) details the CSP’s action plan.

Deepening Collaboration

President Xi’s visit offers an opportunity for both leaders to reflect on their progress and consider deepening their collaboration. The State Visit also serves as a capstone to ongoing discussions about implementing key structures such as the Bi-National Commission, Joint Working Group, People-to-People Exchange Mechanism, and Strategic Dialogue.

Strong Economic Ties

China stands as South Africa’s largest global trading partner by volume, with strong economic ties that benefit both nations. Their relationship extends beyond trade, as China contributes significantly to South Africa’s infrastructure development. Chinese investments support projects such as the Small Harbour Development Project, TVET Refurbishment Project, and Mzimvubu Water Project, crucial for job creation.

Further Collaboration

During their meeting, the presidents will explore further collaboration and partnership opportunities to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations. Outcomes include reaffirming political ties, addressing trade balance, promoting sustainable foreign direct investment, and acknowledging China’s support in bilateral technical cooperation.

Regional Issues and Multilateral Cooperation

The two leaders will discuss regional issues, focusing on development, peace, and security. They will also seek to enhance multilateral cooperation, primarily within the context of BRICS, the G77 plus China, and the G20. Numerous agreements and Memoranda of Understanding are expected to be signed during the State Visit, emphasizing socio-economic cooperation for both countries.

China-Africa Leader’s Roundtable

South Africa and China will co-host the China-Africa Leader’s Roundtable on August 24th and engage in discussions on multilateral cooperation, particularly within the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

Fostering Further Growth and Collaboration

This State Visit is an exceptional occasion for both nations, magnifying the importance of their relationship and fostering further growth and collaboration. South Africa and China’s alliance epitomizes what it means to work together for mutual success.
