South African and Democratic Republic of Congo Transport Departments Sign Ground-breaking Agreement

The transport departments of South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Transport-Related Matters. The agreement was signed by South African Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, and her DRC counterpart, His Excellency Minister Marc Ekila Likombo, on August 4th.

Transport Dialogue and Technical Workshop

Before the signing of the MoU, officials and experts from both countries held a Transport Dialogue and Technical Workshop. The workshop discussed various transport modalities and entities, including the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), the Airport Company South Africa (ACSA), the Air Traffic Navigation Services (ATNS), the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA), the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), and the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), among others.

Bilateral Agreements and Site Visits

After the workshop, Minister Chikunga and Minister Likombo embarked on a detailed program of transport infrastructure site visits, inspections, and walkabouts in several provinces and key areas. They visited the OR Tambo International Airport, Upington Airport, Dube Trade Port, Mount Edgecombe Interchange, and Durban Port. The ministers also took part in a train ride and tour at the Gibela Rail Factory in Dunnottar, Nigel. A Ministerial Delegation Gala Dinner was held in Sandton City, Johannesburg.

Senior officials and technical experts consolidated reports for Ministers Chikunga and Likombo to sign as Bilateral Agreements on transport-related matters. The collaboration aims to enhance the economic benefits for both countries.

Benefits of the Ground-breaking Agreement

The partnership between South Africa and the DRC demonstrates the potential for further growth and expansion in various sectors. By sharing expertise in civil aviation, merchant shipping, maritime matters, land transport infrastructure, land transport safety, transport services, road traffic management, and exchange of technical expertise and technology transfer, both countries can reap the rewards of improved transport infrastructure and create new economic opportunities.

This ground-breaking agreement between South Africa and the DRC sets a new precedent in transport cooperation between the two countries. It not only benefits the nations involved but also serves as an example of how innovative partnerships can lead to the development and growth of the African continent. The Memorandum of Understanding serves as a foundation for a strong partnership that will benefit both nations and contribute to the advancement of the African continent as a whole.
