South Africa’s Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, led a delegation to the 27th World Road Congress in Prague to showcase the country’s progress in developing and maintaining transportation infrastructure. The conference allowed South African officials to present their achievements and ideas to an international audience and engage with their counterparts from other countries. Minister Chikunga highlighted the crucial role of infrastructure investment and implementation in stimulating economic growth and described the Safe Systems approach to road safety promoted by the South African National Roads Agency.
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga led a prominent South African delegation to the 27th World Road Congress in the Czech Republic. Coinciding with the October Transport Month (OTM) 2023 Campaign, which commenced on September 29, the delegation sought to highlight South Africa’s significant accomplishments in developing, maintaining, and enhancing transportation infrastructure.
The delegation included road and transport specialists who discussed the substantial progress achieved in rebuilding South Africa’s economy through road infrastructure projects. These experts were accompanied by South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) executives, such as CEO Reginald Demana and board members, whose objective was to establish and reinforce partnerships with the international transport community.
From October 2 to 6, the conference was held at the Prague Convention Centre and was organized by the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC). Established in 1909, PIARC is a global organization dedicated to fostering international collaboration on road and road transport matters. SANRAL, a Department of Transport agency, joined PIARC in 1995.
At the conference, Minister Chikunga detailed elements of South Africa’s Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan, stressing the crucial role of infrastructure investment, implementation, and upkeep in stimulating and expanding the economy. Establishing a comprehensive and efficient road network is essential to the government’s economic growth strategy.
Minister Chikunga underscored the influence of infrastructure projects on the economy and communities in both urban and rural settings. The World Road Congress also emphasized South Africa’s collaboration with other African nations.
During a road safety-focused ministerial panel discussion, Minister Chikunga emphasized the significance of safety and sustainable design solutions in all SANRAL projects. Addressing the devastation on South Africa’s roads is a primary concern for the Minister, who used this opportunity to describe SANRAL’s Safe Systems approach to road safety.
In recent years, the South African government has invested substantially in transportation infrastructure, acknowledging its vital role in propelling economic growth. These efforts have led to notable accomplishments, such as the construction and development of major highways, enhancement of public transportation systems, and expansion of rural road networks.
Besides physical infrastructure projects, the government has also introduced policies and initiatives aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents on the country’s roads. The Safe Systems approach, promoted by SANRAL, emphasizes a comprehensive road safety strategy that considers road design, vehicle safety standards, driver behavior, and post-accident response and care.
The South African delegation’s participation in the 27th World Road Congress reflects the country’s dedication to the ongoing development and improvement of its transportation infrastructure, both as a means of promoting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
The Prague conference offered South African representatives a valuable opportunity to engage with their international counterparts and share ideas and best practices related to road construction, maintenance, and safety. Furthermore, the event allowed the South African delegation to present the nation’s achievements in transportation infrastructure to a global audience.
As emerging economies like South Africa continue to grow and evolve, the significance of reliable and efficient transportation infrastructure is undeniable. By actively participating in international forums such as the World Road Congress, South African officials are working to ensure their country remains a leader in infrastructure development and innovation.
In summary, the 27th World Road Congress served as a crucial platform for South Africa to share its experiences, challenges, and successes in transportation infrastructure with the global community. By engaging in international cooperation and dialogue, South Africa is better prepared to address the changing needs of a growing economy and ensure the sustainable development of its transportation systems.
