South Africa’s Limpopo Province witnessed the grand launch of Operation Shanela, a multidisciplinary strategy aimed at combating crime throughout the region. The initiative is a five-pillar approach focused on proactive policing and high-density operations. The approach involves gathering relevant information from various sources, including crime analysis systems, informers, witnesses, and community members.

Launch Event

The launch of Operation Shanela took place at Seshego Stadium and was attended by esteemed individuals, including Deputy Minister of Police Mr. Cassel Mathale, MEC for Transport and Community Safety Ms. Florence Radzilane, and Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

Achievements

Since its inception on May 29, 2023, Operation Shanela has led to the arrest of 46 murder suspects, 25 attempted murder suspects, and 37 rape suspects. Additionally, 27 individuals involved in business robberies and 505 for Assault Common were arrested. The operation has also resulted in the confiscation of 53 handguns, four rifles, and the recovery of 40 vehicles. Operation Shanela has shown its commitment to tackling illegal mining by closing down numerous illegal mines and arresting the individuals involved.

Focus of Operation Shanela

The Component Head of Proactive Policing, Visible Policing, and Operations, Major General S. Pienaar, elaborated on the operational framework and focus of Operation Shanela at the event. She emphasized that this innovative operation is led by Provincial Commissioners and Senior Management in all provinces.

Keynote Address

Deputy Minister Mr. Cassel Mathale gave the keynote address at the event and announced that the police seem to be winning the fight against crime through the intensified Operation Shanela. He urged the police to continue their good work and sweep out crime hotspots throughout Limpopo Province.

As the fight against crime intensifies in South Africa, the community is urged to work closely with the police in order to achieve success.
