The Growthpoint SA National Squash Championships returns to Cape Town for the third year in a row, showcasing the country’s top squash players in an exciting display of skill, talent, and sportsmanship. The prestigious event will take place from August 10th to August 12th, 2023, at the iconic V & A Waterfront.
The national competition comprises a series of contests held throughout the country, leading up to a final showdown between eight of South Africa’s best male and female squash players. The games are played on the all-glass court, a unique setting that adds an extra layer of spectacle to an already impressive event.
In 2021, a junior event was introduced and runs concurrently with the Senior Nationals. The initiative aims to promote the sport among younger players, showcasing the best talent in the U15, U17, and U19 age groups. The junior matches will take place from August 17th to August 20th, reflecting a commitment to nurturing the future of squash in South Africa and providing a platform for rising stars to shine.
The senior men’s division features the defending champion, Dewald van Niekerk, who aims to secure his third consecutive Growthpoint squash title. On the women’s side, Eastern Province’s Hayley Ward is the top seed, followed by Alexa Pienaar and previous champion Milnay Louw (2017 & 2019) – all vying for a chance to claim the prestigious title.
Cape Town’s continued partnership with the Growthpoint SA National Squash Championships not only promotes the sport locally but also elevates its status on a national and international level. The tournament provides an opportunity for players to showcase their skills and ensures that the sport continues to thrive globally, as emphasized by the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The event not only focuses on fierce competition but also plays a role in fostering the development of squash in local communities. South African professional squash player, Siyoli Waters, leads interactive sessions for children at the glass court, introducing them to the fundamentals of the game and inspiring the next generation of squash enthusiasts.
The Growthpoint SA National Squash Championships allows Cape Town to celebrate its passion for the sport while serving as a platform for both established and budding athletes. The tournament’s return for the third consecutive year testifies to the city’s dedication to supporting and showcasing the best of squash in South Africa.
As the competition unfolds, spectators can expect a mix of nail-biting matches, sportsmanship, and world-class squash. From the elite players on the all-glass court to the eager juniors looking to make their mark, the Growthpoint SA National Squash Championships stands as a testament to the sport’s enduring appeal and vibrant future in South Africa.
