Southern Africa Comes Together for Sports and Culture Games at Kgoši Mampuru

In a display of unity and cultural diplomacy, the Correctional Services of South Africa will host the Sports and Culture Games from August 14th to 18th, 2023, at the Kgoši Mampuru II Correctional Centre. This event will bring together countries from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), including Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, to participate in various sporting games and cultural exchanges.

Strengthening Connections through Sports and Culture

The Sports and Culture Games serve as an essential aspect of strengthening the historical, social, and cultural connections among the people of the SADC region. By cooperating within the corrections, prisons, and penitentiary services, these countries aim to promote best practices and place African corrections in the international arena.

Diverse Array of Sporting Games

Participating correctional officials will compete in a diverse array of sporting games, such as soccer, netball, aerobics, athletics, chess, darts, pool, tennis, and volleyball, among others. High-ranking officials, generals, and commissioners from each participating country are expected to attend the games in support of their respective teams. The events will take place at the Kgoši Mampuru II Correctional Centre Sporting field, and other venues such as Pilditch Stadium and Gezina sports field.

Promoting a Healthy Workforce

The significance of sports for correctional officials cannot be overstated, especially considering the demanding nature of their work. The games are anticipated to contribute to a healthy workforce within the corrections in the SADC region, promoting the exchange of ideas on how to elevate the work of corrections.

A Celebration of Unity and Progress

The five-day event will kick off with an opening ceremony on August 14th at 08:00 and conclude with a closing ceremony on August 18th at 16:00. A comprehensive program detailing the specifics of the games will be shared with participants and interested media members before the event commences.
