Southern Guild’s Exhibitions Offer Thought-Provoking Artistic Experiences

Southern Guild, a prominent art gallery, is presenting two extraordinary exhibitions from August 24 to October 19, 2023. These exhibitions offer visitors unique opportunities to engage with thought-provoking works that challenge perceptions and push boundaries.

“9 Hopkins” Exhibition by Kamyar Bineshtarigh

The solo show “9 Hopkins” features Kamyar Bineshtarigh’s abstract artworks, set in an industrial hub in central Cape Town. Bineshtarigh’s collection explores gestural mark-making and engages poignantly with his urban surroundings.

Inspired by the accidental marks observed on the walls of a panel-beating workshop at 9 Hopkins Street, Bineshtarigh’s mixed-media paintings are visually striking and conceptually intriguing. The artist employs ink, graphite, and turpentine to recreate these marks, using a unique process of painting directly onto his studio’s walls before peeling away layers to extract his artwork.

“9 Hopkins” provides a profound exploration of intention in mark-making and the transfer of energy in art. Each artwork encompasses layers of experience, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the interplay of presence and memory.

“Of Space and Time” Exhibition by Jesse Ede

The second exhibition, “Of Space and Time,” showcases Jesse Ede’s large-scale sculptural works. Ede’s solo show invites art enthusiasts to embark on a cosmic journey while contemplating humanity’s place in the universe and delving deep into the materiality of stone and metal.

Ede’s sculptures fuse poetic exploration with tactile interaction, offering a transcendent experience for visitors. The exhibition’s centerpiece is a bronze and granite seat that envelops the sitter within a ring of stone, fostering heightened spatial awareness and connection. Circular forms, symbolizing eternity, pervade Ede’s works, creating a visual language that transcends time and form.

Ede’s sculptures carry a texture reminiscent of lunar landscapes and cooled lava, thanks to his unique open-cast smelting process. His choice of locally sourced Cape heritage stone anchors his creations in the region’s rich ecology, bridging the gap between the raw durability of the earth and the manipulation of the artist.

Southern Guild’s dual exhibitions, “9 Hopkins” and “Of Space and Time,” offer visitors a remarkable journey into the realms of artistic exploration and existential contemplation. These exhibitions challenge perceptions and invite viewers to engage with thought-provoking pieces that push boundaries. Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in these unique artistic experiences.
