Stellenbosch: A Destination for Adventure Seekers

Located in South Africa’s wine country, Stellenbosch is a hidden paradise for adventure enthusiasts. While the town is well-known for its vineyards, there are lesser-known treasures that offer a wealth of outdoor activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Cycling to Boschendal

One of the best ways to explore Stellenbosch’s beautiful countryside is through a 20km cycle to Boschendal. With the help of Stellenbosch Adventure Shop, Alan Valkenburg embarked on this journey that showcased some of the region’s most captivating sights. Starting from the town center, they cycled through picturesque countryside roads and scenic trails, enjoying the shade provided by the area’s lush greenery.

Banhoek Conservancy

The route led them to the Banhoek Conservancy in Kylemore, a local pride that attracts both visitors and residents. With fresh air, clear blue skies, and a feeling of seclusion, it’s easy to see why this gem draws so many people. Valkenburg and his group were treated to glimpses of blue wildebeest and a variety of trail types, offering excitement and challenges along the way.

Boschendal

The adventure continued at Boschendal, where they enjoyed smoothies and cheesecake while learning about the wine farm’s diverse offerings. Catering to adventure seekers, Boschendal offers family-friendly hiking and cycling trails, horse riding, farm tours, and plans to introduce blueberries in the coming years, making it an even more enticing destination.

Hiking to Cathedral Waterfalls

After a night spent at Kylemore Guesthouse, Valkenburg and his group embarked on a hike to Cathedral Waterfalls, led by local guide Uhlan Lackay from Pniël Cultural and Environmental Hiking Tours. Along the way, they learned about local history and spotted eland in the distance. The challenging climb was rewarded with a freezing shower beneath the beautiful waterfall, an invigorating experience for the group.

Chilli Oil Taste Kitchen

The journey concluded with a visit to the Chilli Oil Taste Kitchen at Banhoek, where they enjoyed a unique chilli oil milkshake and a well-deserved meal. As Valkenburg reflected on his experience, he marveled at the largely untapped potential of this paradise just outside Stellenbosch. With so many outdoor activities on offer, it’s truly a secret worth discovering for those with an adventurous spirit and a love for the outdoors.
