On June 27, 2023, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Naledi Pandor, will host the German Foreign Minister, Ms. Annalena Baerbock, for the 11th South Africa-Germany Bi-National Commission (BNC). This meeting serves as a symbol of the strong relationship between these two influential nations, demonstrating their dedication to collaboration and progress.
The BNC acts as the primary instrument for managing the extensive relationship between South Africa and Germany. Comprised of seven working groups, the BNC focuses on critical areas such as foreign and security policy, economy, energy, environment and climate, development cooperation, agriculture, science and technology, arts and culture, and labor, social affairs, and vocational training. These groups have convened, preparing reports for submission and approval at the meeting.
During the BNC, the ministers will engage in discussions on geopolitical issues that affect Africa and Europe. The conversation will also address multilateral issues such as South Africa’s chairship of BRICS, climate change, preparations for COP28, the G20 Compact with Africa, and the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The BNC conversation is expected to generate insightful and productive dialogue, which could have lasting impacts on the global stage.
Germany holds a significant position in South Africa’s international partnerships. It is a significant trading partner, a vital source of investment, and the third-largest contributor to overseas tourism. Moreover, Germany plays a critical role in South Africa’s development initiatives, demonstrating their interconnected interests and mutual benefits.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) believes that the BNC will contribute to the consolidation and strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations. It is more critical than ever to nurture strong partnerships with the world facing numerous challenges, such as climate change, economic instability, and security threats.
The 11th South Africa-Germany Bi-National Commission Meeting will take place at the DIRCO Conference Centre on June 27, 2023, at 8:00 AM. This event represents the power of collaboration and the importance of maintaining and nurturing global partnerships. As the BNC unfolds, the world will look to South Africa and Germany to lead by example in addressing complex global issues such as combating climate change and promoting peace and security.
