The ongoing taxi strike in Cape Town poses significant concerns surrounding its economic activity. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, recently held a meeting with representatives from the food and beverage sectors to discuss urgent socio-economic challenges.
To address the challenges posed by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) strike, the City has decided to extend safety escort services to food delivery trucks in affected communities. This initiative aims to ensure the continuity of economic activity and supply of necessary goods to locals.
Additionally, the City has sought assistance from NGOs such as Gift of the Givers and Heal our Land to provide food relief to struggling communities.
The City of Cape Town has engaged with Cape Town Tourism (CTT) to safeguard the wellbeing of tourists and employees relying on public transport. Alderman Vos expressed condolences and assured the City’s collaboration with the South African Police Service to bring the perpetrators to justice. He also urged travelers to visit www.capetown.travel for information on safe visitor experiences.
The City is in discussion with the Cape Town and Western Cape Convention Bureau, managed by Wesgro, to minimize disruptions to conferences and events. Such gatherings inject billions of rands into Cape Town’s economy and generate thousands of jobs for locals.
Cape Town’s business environment propels job creation and investments. The City’s tireless efforts have led to thousands of citizens securing employment and entrepreneurs launching new businesses. The City remains committed to safeguarding the gains made in communities across the metro.
The City of Cape Town is actively addressing the economic challenges posed by the ongoing taxi strike. Through collaboration with various industries, the City aims to maintain economic stability, protect the wellbeing of residents and visitors, and ensure continued growth and prosperity for all.
