Strengthening Relations and Tackling Challenges: Highlights from the Western Cape Cabinet Meeting

On May 24th, the Western Cape Government (WCG) Cabinet came together to discuss pressing issues and opportunities for growth. One of the main topics of discussion was the strengthening of relations between the European Union (EU) and the WCG, with special guest Ms. Sandra Kramer, Ambassador of the EU delegation, in attendance.

Tackling Barriers to Growth

Premier Alan Winde opened the discussion by highlighting the need to address barriers to the region’s potential in energy, safety, and job creation. He emphasized the EU’s role as a valuable partner in fostering economic growth and attracting investments.

Acknowledging Mutual Concerns

Ambassador Kramer acknowledged the healthy relationship shared between the EU, the WCG, and the province’s private sector. She also highlighted mutual concerns, including energy, job creation, and safety, as well as the negative impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on global order. Kramer emphasized the importance of the EU’s economic ties with South Africa, citing the employment of 350,000 South Africans by European companies in the country.

Recognizing Local Partnerships

Kramer lauded partnerships with Western Cape-based organizations, such as GreenCape, which promote green energy and economic development within the province. Addressing the nation’s energy crisis, high unemployment, crime, and economic stagnation, Kramer praised the resilience of South Africans and Western Cape residents. She also committed to working closely with the WCG to overcome these challenges.

Education and Financial Matters

The Cabinet also discussed the Back on Track Programme, aimed at reversing learning losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and improving education outcomes. The Cabinet thanked the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) for its efforts and encouraged learners, parents, and teachers to participate in the program.

Regarding financial matters, the Provincial Treasury presented the final quarter of the 2022/23 financial performance to the Cabinet. Premier Winde commended the province’s fiscal management, emphasizing the importance of good governance in delivering critical services to citizens.

Supporting Vulnerable Citizens

The meeting saw the approval of the policy approach and criteria for providing load-shedding emergency packs. The Cabinet supported the rollout of these packs to five identified vulnerable groups as soon as possible, emphasizing the province’s commitment to assisting its most vulnerable citizens.

Containing Outbreaks

Lastly, the Cabinet expressed concern over outbreaks of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) and African Swine Fever in the province, which have significantly impacted the poultry sector and informal pig farming. The Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA) is working closely with industry partners to contain outbreaks, limit impact, and prevent further spread.

The Western Cape Government’s Cabinet meeting reflected the government’s determination to address critical issues while fostering strong international relations for the betterment of its citizens.
