Strengthening the South Africa-Mozambique Bond: Deputy Minister’s Visit to Maputo

The fraternal relationship between South Africa and Mozambique has grown stronger since their struggle against colonialism and apartheid. To further strengthen this bond, the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms. Candith Mashego-Dlamini, will co-chair the Midterm Review (MTR) of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) during an official visit to Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, on June 20-21, 2023.

The Bilateral Relationship

The structured bilateral relationship between the two nations began with the establishment of the BNC in December 2011. Since then, more than 70 agreements and memoranda of understanding have been signed, showcasing the broad scope of their cooperation. The leaders of both countries have increased interactions, focusing on enhancing trade, investment, peace, and stability in the region.

Presidential Visits

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has made several trips to Mozambique since his inauguration in 2018. Notable visits include his courtesy call upon being elected to the Presidency in March 2018, his attendance at the signing ceremony of the Maputo Peace Accords in August 2019, and President Filipe Nyusi’s Presidential Inauguration Ceremony in January 2020. Furthermore, President Ramaphosa participated in various SADC Summits of Heads of State and Government convened in Maputo during 2021.

Mutual Support

The mutual support between the two countries has been evident during times of need. South Africa, through the African Renaissance Fund (ARF), provided assistance to Mozambique during the aftermath of Cyclone Idai in 2019. Mozambique reciprocated by rendering aid to the South African province of KZN when floods struck in 2022.

Working Visit

The Deputy Minister’s visit aims to review the progress made since the 3rd Session of the BNC held in South Africa in March 2022. The visit also serves as an opportunity to evaluate and assess the implementation of all outstanding decisions and commitments.

Strengthening the Bond

The strengthening of the bond between South Africa and Mozambique highlights the importance of maintaining and nurturing close relationships between neighboring countries. Close cooperation, including trade, investment, and regional peace and stability, ultimately benefits both nations and their citizens.

Future Outlook

Ms. Candith Mashego-Dlamini’s visit to Maputo is expected to lead to the further development of this fruitful partnership between South Africa and Mozambique. The future of their relationship holds great promise for both nations and the wider region, with the spirit of mutual support and collaboration deeply rooted in their shared history.
