Strengthening Ties: South Africa’s Minister Naledi Pandor in Angola

Dr. Naledi Pandor, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, visited Angola for a working visit on June 25, 2023. Her aim was to engage in diplomatic and political consultations with her counterpart, Ambassador Tete António, the Minister of External Relations of the Republic of Angola. The meeting served to fortify the historic and fraternal relationship between the two nations.

Building Bilateral Relations

The visit was a precursor to the upcoming state visit by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of the Republic of Angola, scheduled for July 2023. During the working visit, the ministers discussed various aspects concerning the state of bilateral relations between South Africa and Angola.

They also exchanged views on regional, continental, and international matters of mutual interest, given that Angola is slated to assume the position of Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from August 2023. This marks a significant development in the region.

Economic Ties

Dr. Pandor also met with representatives from South African businesses operating in Angola. This interaction highlighted the economic ties between the two nations and showcased the importance of collaboration and mutual support in fostering growth and development.

A Long-standing Friendship

The bond between South Africa and Angola dates back to their establishment of representative offices in January 1992. By May 1994, they had formed full diplomatic relations, and their relationship has since continued to flourish. The two nations maintain communication through a Bi-National Commission (BNC) co-chaired by their respective presidents.

As Angola prepares to assume its new role as the Chair of SADC, South Africa’s support and collaboration remain essential in fostering progress and stability within the region. The diplomatic visit by Dr. Naledi Pandor to Angola exemplifies the significance of maintaining strong connections between countries and working together to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Strengthening the Alliance

The visit by Dr. Naledi Pandor and the upcoming state visit by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço demonstrate the commitment of both nations to nurturing their long-standing friendship. The ministers’ discussions on various topics highlight the importance of cooperation and dialogue in tackling regional, continental, and international issues. Undoubtedly, the state visit will serve as another stepping stone in strengthening the alliance between South Africa and Angola as they continue to support each other’s growth and development.
