The participants raised over R600,000, highlighting the power of sports in uniting people for a noble cause.
In just over a year since its establishment, Run For Rangers has transformed into an exceptional yearly event that goes beyond the scope of race and sport in the pursuit of wildlife preservation. The brainchild of nineteen-year-old Harry Bailey, a former student of Hilton College, Run For Rangers represents a joint venture between Project Rhino and the Sport For Lives movement. The event’s primary goal is to promote unity with game rangers who courageously safeguard endangered species worldwide every day.
Run For Rangers 2023 was held in the breathtaking Babanango Game Reserve, nestled in Zululand’s heart in KwaZulu-Natal. Rich in Zulu history, this region also serves as the location for one of Southern Africa’s most impressive rewilding endeavors. Spanning a vast 20,000 hectares, three community trusts manage the reserve, reflecting their unwavering dedication to long-term conservation efforts.
In a remarkable demonstration of togetherness and compassion, 17 official runners, including four Hilton College students, joined 12 rangers in completing a 100 km course over two days. The demanding terrain of the reserve, home to the Big 5, provided the perfect setting for this inspiring event. More than just a race, the participants exemplified the essence of camaraderie as they tested their limits in a challenging environment that required fortitude and collaboration.
The rangers guided the participants, their rhythmic singing resonating throughout the reserve and capturing the spirit of unity. This uplifting atmosphere inspired the runners during the grueling course, with only nine of them making it to the finish line. Nevertheless, the group succeeded in raising over R600,000 through the Sport For Lives platform, an incredible accomplishment highlighting the power of sports in uniting people for a noble cause.
Backed by the International Rangers Federation and the Game Rangers Association of Africa, Run For Rangers aspires to draw attention to the sacrifices made by game rangers across the globe. This year alone, 148 rangers have tragically lost their lives while performing their duties. Project Rhino, the primary beneficiary of the event, provides support and training to over 500 rangers in KwaZulu-Natal.
Ncedo Koyana, Director of Relationships at Sport For Lives, stresses the importance of empathy as a central tenet. By stepping into another’s shoes, they believe individuals can cultivate a deeper understanding and connection, ultimately leading to a more compassionate world.
The Run For Rangers 2023 event’s success was significantly attributed to Babanango Game Reserve’s unwavering commitment. A proud member of Project Rhino, the reserve not only offered its magnificent landscape but also supplied outstanding hospitality, nutritious meals, and logistical assistance for the runners. Carlien Roodt, Director of Project Rhino, expressed her gratitude for the unforgettable experience created for everyone involved.
Run For Rangers 2023 serves as a compelling example of the potential in collaboration and community involvement. The convergence of diverse participants, united by a common objective of wildlife conservation, illustrates the profound impact achievable through empathy, unity, and sportsmanship. The event, in its entirety, highlights the significance of forging alliances for the greater good; without the combined efforts of Babanango Game Reserve, Project Rhino, and Sport For Lives, along with various sponsors, the extraordinary accomplishments of Run For Rangers 2023 would not have been feasible.
As we eagerly anticipate future iterations of this inspiring event, it is essential to remember the lessons of unity and empathy that Run For Rangers 2023 has emphasized. By embracing these values, we can continue to make progress in conserving our planet’s invaluable wildlife and strive for a more harmonious coexistence with the natural world.
