The Bailey is a new culinary destination on Bree Street in Cape Town that offers a sophisticated luxury experience from dawn until after dark. Chef-restaurateur Liam Tomlin designed the three-level venue as a place where like-minded adults can meet, eat, and drink in good company.
At street level is Cafe Bailey, a glamorous patisserie with a champagne and cocktail bar. The cafe offers delicious pastries and cakes with fragrant teas and coffees, all-day breakfasts, brunches, and lunches.
Upstairs, on the middle floor, is Brasserie Bailey, a classic European-style bistro with a maître d’ to ensure top-level service and hospitality. On the menu, guests can expect an assortment of classic plates, such as smoked salmon blinis, lobster rolls, beef-fillet crostini, and brioche tartare.
On the rooftop, there is The Old Bailey, a wine and whisky bar for aficionados that currently has 288 whiskeys in stock.
The venue is housed in a historical building dating back to 1682, which has been beautifully renovated to retain its essence and best features. The decor is sumptuous and comfortable, featuring jewel-coloured velvets and marble-topped tables.
The Bailey has a young team of chefs who are knocking it out of the park. At the helm is 25-year-old head chef Jacques Grové, who has an impressive CV. Sous chef Dian Botes and head pastry chef San-Marie Pienaar are also highly skilled and talented.
A varied collection of unique works created by local artists can be seen on the walls of each of the three floors, serving as the unifying element that connects all of these spaces. The private dining area named after the late artist Paul du Toit is undeniably a standout feature of the establishment.
The Bailey is a fantastic addition to Cape Town’s culinary scene. It offers a wonderful choice of small plates and classic French dishes with outstanding service, and the food is delicious and beautifully presented. Although not cheap, it is well worth the money, highly recommended, and a great place for a night out.
