Early morning on June 29, a daring group of nine armed robbers attacked an ATM at a filling station in Odendaalsrus. Using force and violence, the robbers threatened and overpowered the staff, demanding money before bombing the ATM.
The robbers approached the employees, and two of them brandished their handguns, striking fear into the hearts of the workers. The situation became violent as one of the attendants was brutally struck on the forehead with a firearm, leaving him injured.
Soon after the robbery, a vehicle from a private security company, along with Odendaalsrus SAPS members, attempted to intervene. However, the robbers were ready to face any opposition and opened fire, causing damage to the security vehicle. One of the robbers was seen carrying a bag as the group escaped in different directions. Despite the pursuit, the suspects managed to elude the authorities.
The crime resulted in the bombing of the ATM at the filling station in Block 5 Kutloanong Odendaalsrus. A white Fidelity plastic bag filled with cash was discovered near a fuel pump, likely dropped by one of the fleeing robbers. Further examination of the scene revealed ink-dyed cash and 9mm cartridges, along with a damaged vehicle parked next to the ATM. The incident has been registered as a case of ATM bombing, armed robbery, and attempted murder for further investigation.
Captain Stephen Thakeng, the police spokesperson, urged the community to come forward with any information that may help locate the criminals. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in solving crimes and asked individuals to contact Detective Captain Keke Moeketsi of Odendaalsrus Detectives or reach out to the nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Anonymous tips can also be communicated through the MySAPS App on smartphones, ensuring that any information received will be treated as confidential.
This incident highlights the risks faced by employees working in vulnerable environments, such as filling stations. The brazenness and lack of empathy displayed by the robbers serve as a reminder of the ongoing battle against crime. However, the discovery of the dropped money bag and the evidence left behind offer hope that the suspects may be apprehended. Law enforcement, private security companies, and the vigilant public must work together to prevent such crimes in the future.
As chilling as this event may be, it is essential to acknowledge the bravery of the workers who faced this terrifying ordeal. Their resilience in the face of danger is a testament to the human spirit. Meanwhile, the authorities remain dedicated to their pursuit of these criminals, working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the community.
