The Bounty of Cape Town’s Farmers’ Markets

Cape Town is a city of contrasts, where the urban landscape meets the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and sea. It’s no wonder that the city’s farmers’ markets are such a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike. From the lush valleys of Elgin to the historic wine estate of Stellenbosch, there is no shortage of markets to explore and discover.

The Charm of Oranjezicht City Farm Market

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market (OZCF) is a gem in the heart of Granger Bay, where the hustle and bustle of the city melt away into the serene atmosphere of the market. With its stunning views of the sea and Table Mountain, the market is a favorite spot among locals for a relaxed weekend morning. Here, visitors can indulge in freshly brewed coffee or juice on the one hand, while the other hand is full of delicious baked pastries or fresh produce.

The OZCF is an excellent spot for foodies, with organic dairy, fresh bread, and farm-fresh produce available. There are also three bars to choose from, serving up craft beer and local wines. The market is a prime example of the farm-to-table movement that has gained popularity worldwide, focusing on sustainability and community. The OZCF is open on Saturdays from 8:15 am to 2 pm and on Sundays from 9 am to 2 pm.

A Family-Friendly Experience at Blaauwklippen Family Market

The Blaauwklippen Family Market, located in the historic wine estate of Stellenbosch, is a perfect spot for a day out with the family. The market is open every weekend and offers a relaxed atmosphere where visitors can sit under the shaded trees and sample the baked goods and fresh produce. The market also features local crafts, jewelry, and fashion, making it a perfect spot for the entire family. Children will love the pony rides, pedal carts, soccer darts, and jumping castles, while the market is dog-friendly.

The Blaauwklippen Family Market is a celebration of the Cape Dutch architecture that characterizes the estate. Visitors can explore the historic buildings while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding vineyards. The market is open from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Exploring the Elgin Railway Market

The Elgin Railway Market is a unique farmers’ market held within an old apple warehouse in Elgin’s lush valley. The market has been transformed into an ‘art-deco, steampunk’ space, where visitors can enjoy live music while exploring the countless stalls available, selling artisan cheese, dim sum, and local produce. The market is a feast for the senses, with the delicious smells of freshly cooked food filling the air and the sounds of live music adding to the festive atmosphere.

One of the unique features of the Elgin Railway Market is the chance to see an 80-year-old steam train roar its way past the market. Children will love the jungle gym, roundabout, and indoor and outdoor climbing walls. The market is a celebration of the area’s industrial heritage, and visitors can explore the history of the railway while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to 4 pm.

A unique window

Cape Town’s farmers’ markets offer a unique window into the city’s culture, history, and community. From the farm-to-table movement to the celebration of local crafts, these markets are a feast for the senses and reflect the city’s diverse and vibrant spirit. Whether you’re a foodie, a history buff, or just looking for a fun day out with the family, Cape Town’s farmers’ markets have something for everyone.
