The City of Cape Town has announced plans to upgrade the road infrastructure in Mowbray. The construction work will focus on St Peters and Durban Roads and begin this week. The project is expected to span a period of five weeks, starting from Main Road and extending to Liesbeek Parkway.
To minimize traffic disruptions, the work will be carried out at night, between 19:00 and 05:30, from Monday to Sunday. However, during the construction period, both directions of traffic along St Peters and Durban Roads will be affected. Nearby residents may experience some noise disturbances at night.
The roadworks will involve several tasks, including repairs to damaged or missing kerbs, the installation of an asphalt grid reinforcement on select sections of the road, and the removal of existing asphalt surfacing. The old surfacing will be replaced with new hot-mix asphalt surfacing. The road markings will be reinstated after the completion of the works.
Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, has appealed to the residents for their cooperation and patience during the construction period. He highlighted the importance of well-maintained road infrastructure in the area and acknowledged the significance of this particular section of Mowbray. The night work has been scheduled to expedite the project and alleviate daytime congestion. However, this may result in some noise disturbances at night for nearby residents.
