Despite facing violent resistance from a small group of residents, the teams succeeded in disconnecting these unlawful connections.

The Dangers of Illegal Connections

Illegal connections overload the energy grid, leading to power outages that can last for extended periods, affecting hundreds of residents and damaging vital infrastructure. Such connections also pose a significant risk to the community, especially children who may be electrocuted by unsafe connections.

The teams’ determined efforts led to the confiscation of over a truckload of cables used for illegal connections. The City’s message is clear – they will continue to protect their electricity infrastructure and supply only those who are legally connected. Illegal connections place an unsustainable burden on the grid, leading to prolonged outages that can take up to eight hours to repair. Such connections target overhead infrastructure, streetlights, kiosks, mini substations, and underground cabling. Repetitive repairs of the same infrastructure are not only unsustainable but also a drain on resources.

The City offers a reward of R5,000 to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest, confiscation of stolen or illegal goods, or the surrender of such goods.
