The Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) team members were instrumental in these operations, accounting for 201 arrests, the majority of these being linked to narcotics.

On February 11, 2024, a vehicle checkpoint in Lansdowne witnessed a remarkable incident. Seven individuals, within the age range of 28 and 41 years, were apprehended on charges of drunk driving. An added charge of resisting arrest was leveled against one of the suspects, serving as a reminder of the obstacles often faced by law enforcement personnel. The South African Police Service (SAPS) facilities in Lansdowne became their holding bay.

Effective Patrols

In a parallel incident on the same day, while on a vigil in Peta Court, Manenberg, law enforcement officers spotted a suspicious individual. The person in question displayed an altered behavior upon noticing the patrol vehicles, which heightened the officers’ suspicions. Quick action from the officers led to a search operation, revealing the individual’s possession of 39 units of heroin. The suspect, a 37-year-old, was subsequently arrested on drug-related charges and detained at the Steenberg SAPS. This incident serves as an affirmation of the effectiveness of vigilant patrols and the officers’ ability to identify and respond to unusual behavior.

These patrols and several others resulted in the arrest of 61 individuals and the issuance of 3536 penalties, thereby emphasizing the tireless efforts of the enforcement officers.

Emergency Response and Traffic Management

The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) during this time recorded 2024 calls, with 789 being medical emergencies. These counts included 46 domestic violence incidents and 127 physical assault instances. The PECC also recorded 59 motor vehicle accidents, highlighting the vast range and magnitude of the emergencies managed by the Center.

Community Participation in Crime Prevention

In summary, these operations underscore a robust and unyielding law enforcement mechanism. The Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, lauded the enforcement patrols within the community and the officers’ swift action upon receiving information. He emphasized that visible policing can indeed act as a deterrent to crime. Further, he stressed that arrests for severe offenses like illegal possession of firearms and narcotics can nip the crime cycle in the bud before it inflicts severe damage on innocent lives.

Alderman Smith also advocated for community involvement, inviting citizens to join hands with the officers, neighborhood watches, and other enforcement agencies in sharing information that could lead to successful arrests.
