The Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit has recently arrested a South African Police Service (SAPS) detective accused of obstructing justice and protecting a drug peddler from a search by his fellow officers. Earlier this week, the Anti-Corruption Unit arrested a police constable who was accompanying the alleged drug dealer. The unit intervened and stopped the duo when the 26-year-old police detective claimed he had accompanied the alleged drug dealer during their search. Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk shared details about the case, stating that the officers intended to search the alleged drug peddler, but the detective tried to prevent them. Van Wyk further stated that the alleged drug dealer was arrested after discovering cocaine in his possession.
Provincial Commissioner Thembisile Patekile has emphasized that corruption within the Western Cape police ranks will not be tolerated. Patekile warned that officers caught breaking the law would face prosecution.
