Alpaca Loom Coffee Shop and Weaving Studio is a hidden treasure located in the town of Paarl, just 40 minutes away from Cape Town. The sanctuary is home to over 300 alpacas and a few llamas, providing a fascinating encounter with these captivating South American animals that are closely related to camels.
Upon arriving, visitors can participate in a barn tour that immerses them in the enchanting world of alpacas. Knowledgeable guides lead the way and provide interesting information about these captivating animals. For example, visitors learn that alpacas have a gestation period that can last up to 345 days. The tour costs R100 per adult and R70 per child and includes entrance to the petting zoo and jungle gym area.
The petting zoo provides visitors with the opportunity to get up close and personal with the friendly alpacas. For an additional R20, guests can purchase alpaca treats to feed these gentle creatures. This provides a perfect opportunity for a selfie with newfound furry friends. Although alpacas may spit occasionally, they are more likely to do so at each other than at humans.
Along with the barn tours and petting zoo, Alpaca Loom offers guided alpaca walks at 10 am and 4 pm daily. These must be booked in advance. During these walks, visitors can explore the farm and its surroundings while accompanied by an alpaca on a halter, learning even more about these fascinating animals.
Not only is Alpaca Loom home to these incredible animals, but it also showcases the remarkable craftsmanship of local artisans. Alpaca wool was highly valued and worn exclusively by Incan royalty. Today, the Alpaca Loom is playing a significant role in introducing alpaca wool to South Africa’s wool industry. Alpaca wool is soft, hypoallergenic, and warmer than sheep wool and mohair, making it ideal for a wide range of uses.
In September, the alpacas at the loom are sheared, and their wool is spun into various yarns. Visitors can browse through an array of exquisite alpaca products, such as scarves, shawls, ponchos, blankets, rugs, mittens, and beanies, all produced within the weaving studio. While guests marvel at the craftsmanship, they can savor a selection of delicious treats at the on-site coffee shop. The menu features freshly brewed coffee, gourmet puff pastry pies, lip-smacking quiches, toasted sandwiches, and a variety of muffins – all enjoyed with a breathtaking view of the alpaca herd, the farm, and Table Mountain.
For those who wish to form a special bond with their favorite alpaca, Alpaca Loom offers adoption packages. Adoptive parents can name their alpaca and visit them during a barn tour, with regular Facebook updates provided on their progress. Additionally, a range of adorable memorabilia is available for purchase, including socks, homeware, caps, coloring books, puzzles, pencil bags, and stuffed toys.
Whether you’re a child or an adult, the enchanting world of the Alpaca Loom promises an unforgettable experience that will leave you filled with wonder and appreciation for these remarkable creatures.
