The Importance of Shared Responsibility in Animal Care

As urban areas continue to experience an increase in animal-related concerns, it is crucial for citizens to take an active role in ensuring animal well-being and control. This shared responsibility is becoming increasingly important in cities worldwide.

Impoundment of Animals

The City’s Animal Control Unit experienced a drastic increase in animal impoundment statistics from July 2022 to March 2023. Within this period, the unit impounded 1,926 animals, including dogs, cats, and livestock. This is a significant jump compared to the 554 animals impounded in the previous financial year. The reasons for impoundment vary from roaming in dangerous areas to involvement in an attack.

Strain on Animal Welfare

The alarming growth in animal impoundment statistics puts considerable strain on both the Animal Control Unit and animal welfare organizations. When left unclaimed or not rehomed, animals face euthanasia, underscoring the need for better care and protection.

The Animal Keeping By-law

The City’s Animal Keeping By-law addresses the issue of animal population control by limiting the number of dogs or cats that residents can keep, depending on the property type and size. This by-law also mandates pet registration with the City and sterilization by the age of six months.

Importance of Pet Registration

Pet registration serves two critical functions: setting a benchmark for the pet population in the city and determining the scale and budget needed for animal interventions. Currently, the City’s pet registration database includes 134,679 pets, with 100,522 dogs and 34,157 cats. Pet registration is free and can be completed via the City’s online portal.

Shared responsibility for animal care is essential in addressing the growing challenges of animal management in urban areas. Adherence to by-laws and taking responsibility for pet care will ensure a safer and healthier environment for both animals and humans.
