South Africa is in mourning following the death of Klaas de Jonge, an exceptional Dutch activist who fought against apartheid and was a member of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK). In 1985, he was arrested by the South African Police, but he managed to escape and sought refuge at the Dutch embassy in Pretoria, where he stayed for two years. In 1987, he was exchanged for the apartheid regime’s commander, Wynand du Toit.
Despite the challenges he faced, De Jonge remained committed to opposing apartheid. He continued his work as a member of MK and the Dutch Anti-Apartheid Movement until 1989. His life partner, Helene Pastoors, also played a significant role in the anti-apartheid resistance, and both were recognized for their contributions with the National Order of the Companions of OR Tambo.
