The Leralla to Germiston Passenger Rail Line is Inaugurated by Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga

On August 28, 2023, the Minister of Transport in South Africa, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, inaugurated the Leralla to Germiston passenger rail line, marking a significant milestone in the rail recovery program of infrastructure and stations by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). The event was attended by PRASA Executives, board members, and members of the media.

Significant Corridors Recovered by PRASA

Minister Chikunga highlighted the Leralla to Germiston line as one of the 18 corridors recovered by PRASA to date. The agency is committed to bringing passenger rail back as a backbone of the public transport system in the country.

Objectives of the Rail Recovery Program

One of the key objectives of the rail recovery program is to extend the services from Germiston to Johannesburg. This expansion will further enhance connectivity and improve mobility for commuters while reducing road congestion and environmental impacts.

Official Opening and Train Ride

The official opening of the Leralla to Germiston line was preceded by a train ride led by Minister Chikunga. Members of the media were invited to join the journey, with transportation to the event arranged from Umjantshi House, JHB CBD, and Gauteng Nerve Centre, Esselen Park, Tembisa.
