On August 28, 2023, the Minister of Transport in South Africa, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, inaugurated the Leralla to Germiston passenger rail line, marking a significant milestone in the rail recovery program of infrastructure and stations by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). The event was attended by PRASA Executives, board members, and members of the media.
Minister Chikunga highlighted the Leralla to Germiston line as one of the 18 corridors recovered by PRASA to date. The agency is committed to bringing passenger rail back as a backbone of the public transport system in the country.
One of the key objectives of the rail recovery program is to extend the services from Germiston to Johannesburg. This expansion will further enhance connectivity and improve mobility for commuters while reducing road congestion and environmental impacts.
The official opening of the Leralla to Germiston line was preceded by a train ride led by Minister Chikunga. Members of the media were invited to join the journey, with transportation to the event arranged from Umjantshi House, JHB CBD, and Gauteng Nerve Centre, Esselen Park, Tembisa.
The government’s dedication to revamping the country’s public transport infrastructure is reflected in the opening of the Leralla to Germiston line. PRASA’s rail recovery program is aimed at making public transport more efficient, reliable, and safe for the millions of South Africans who rely on it daily.
PRASA’s rail recovery program also aims to modernize and expand their services to meet the needs of the growing demand for public transport. This is crucial in ensuring that the needs of the public are met in a sustainable and progressive manner.
The rail recovery program has not only brought positive changes in infrastructure but has also contributed to job creation and economic growth. The government’s investment in infrastructure development is generating opportunities for the local workforce and boosting the national economy.
The reopening of the Leralla to Germiston passenger rail line is a symbol of progress and a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the lives of South Africans through sustainable public transportation solutions.
The Ministry of Transport and PRASA, along with their dedicated team of professionals, continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the rail recovery program remains on track. With the support and cooperation from all stakeholders, including the media and the public, the rail recovery program is set to bring about a new era of improved connectivity and accessibility for the people of South Africa. The opening of the Leralla to Germiston line is yet another step towards achieving this ambitious goal.
