The School Run: A Guide for Cape Town Parents

As the new school year begins in Cape Town, parents everywhere are bracing themselves for the dreaded school run. While it might seem simple, navigating the traffic and rush hour congestion can be a nightmare, especially for those living in the Southern Suburbs.

The pressure is real, and it doesn’t help that some schools are located close to each other, leading to exaggerated traffic congestion during peak hours. Even the most tried and trusted shortcuts can be neutralized when the universe works against you. The traffic lights seem to be timed for a green light to last only three seconds, and not everyone is keen on letting you into the traffic flow.

But fear not. There are ways to make the school run less stressful. Here are some tips from experienced Cape Town parents:

Lift Clubs

Consider starting a lift club with other parents with children attending the same school or living in your area. This can help to reduce traffic congestion and provide a convenient and safe way for your child to get to school.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Organizing your child’s extra-curricular activities can be challenging, especially if they are involved in multiple sports or clubs. Create a schedule and stick to it so you don’t have to remember what time the pick-up is every day.

Public Transport

While not everyone is keen on letting their children commute by train, bus, or taxi, it is an option to consider. However, safety must be guaranteed before considering this option. Be aware of your privilege, and remember that many parents cannot take their children to school and collect them daily.

Community Involvement

Manenberg residents are an excellent example of community involvement. For example, the community sets up “school buses” where groups of parents walk children to school and across busy roads. It is awesome to see this sense of community in a suburb where many great things are happening.

Safety First

As parents, our top priority is the safety of our children. Remind your children to be vigilant when walking or cycling to school. Unfortunately, the roads in Cape Town are not safe enough to consider riding a bicycle to school.

In conclusion, the school run is a challenge for Cape Town parents, but with some thoughtful planning and community involvement, it can be less stressful. Remember to prioritize safety and never compromise on it. See you all on the school run – let’s go some hazards as a greeting!
