The Transformation of Wynberg: MyCiTi Bus Service and Upgraded Infrastructure

The suburb of Wynberg in Cape Town is set to undergo significant changes with the MyCiTi bus service’s new routes and infrastructure. This project, approved by the Council in 2019, will enhance the area’s traffic flow, public transport, as well as improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Proposed Bridge

The construction of a bridge over the Southern railway line is one of the most notable aspects of this project. The overpass will connect the eastern and western sides of Wynberg and accommodate four lanes, including dedicated walking and cycling lanes. This will provide an additional crossing for commuters, alleviating traffic pressure on Rockley and Victoria Roads.

Benefits of the Project

Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, emphasized the far-reaching benefits of the project. “The roll-out of the MyCiTi service will transform Wynberg,” he said. “What often goes unsaid, however, is how the new MyCiTi related road infrastructure will assist in alleviating general traffic congestion where the service is rolled out.”

Road Closures

To accommodate the new dedicated bus lanes, several roads will undergo full or partial closures on a permanent basis. These closures are designed to improve public transport safety, private vehicle safety, and ease traffic flow. All residents will continue to have access to their properties.

Urban Regeneration

This infrastructure project will stimulate urban regeneration in the greater Wynberg area. The City is making a substantial investment in the upgrade of road infrastructure in Greater Wynberg, which will transform this area and ignite urban regeneration. This rejuvenation will have a positive impact on local businesses and visitors using the roads or pedestrianized areas. As this expands, everyone in Wynberg stands to benefit, including local residents and property owners.

Resident Feedback

Starting from June 26, 2023, residents will have the opportunity to comment on the bridge over the Southern railway line and the proposed road closures. Additionally, the City will host an information day in July 2023 to engage with the community and address any concerns or questions.

The transformation of Wynberg promises to be an exciting chapter in the suburb’s rich history. The MyCiTi bus service and upgraded infrastructure will not only provide a more efficient public transport system but also enhance the overall quality of life for residents, local businesses, and visitors alike. With a focus on mobility, safety, and urban regeneration, the transformation of Wynberg is a tremendous opportunity for everyone living in and around the area.
