However, in recent years, Schuster has faced controversy and mounting criticism over accusations of profiting from his use of blackface. As “woke” culture gained prominence in South Africa, he found himself facing cancelation. He later expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging some regret for benefiting from such a racially insensitive practice.

In June 2020, Showmax, a South African streaming service, removed over six of his films from their platform, deeming them racially offensive.

The Resilience

Despite the controversy and criticism, Schuster demonstrated resilience and continued creating content. In 2022, his film Mr. Bones 3: Son of Bones premiered in cinemas and sold over 38,000 tickets within the first week, raking in an impressive R4.2 million.

However, his personal life took a somber turn as he grieved the loss of his mother, Jessie Schuster. In a series of poignant posts, Leon Schuster paid tribute to his late mother and revealed how her passing led him to rediscover his faith.
