The highly anticipated World Rugby U20 Championship is returning in 2023 and will be hosted at the iconic Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. It will feature 12 teams from across the globe showcasing their incredible talent and sportsmanship.
A total of nine tournament matches, including the grand finale, will take place at Athlone Stadium. The stadium reflects its versatility and capability to accommodate various types of events and sports, making it an ideal location for hosting rugby matches. In May, the stadium successfully hosted the DHL Western Province Currie Cup, adding another achievement to its list.
Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to host more rugby matches at Athlone Stadium. He also wished the participating teams, especially South Africa, the best of luck as they compete in the championship.
The World Rugby U20 Championship 2023 coincides with school holidays, making it an ideal opportunity for parents, caregivers, and children to attend matches on July 4, 9, and 14 at Athlone Stadium. Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, encouraged support for the under 20 South African team and local businesses in the area.
