Nestled in the heart of the Silo District in Cape Town’s iconic V&A Waterfront, The Yard offers all visitors a unique and inviting space. So whether you’re a local or a tourist, a shopper, or a culture seeker, this bistro-bar-boutique hybrid is sure to please.
With its raw concrete and slick marble decor, plush leather seats, and industrial-style sliding windows that offer views of significant art installations, The Yard is a feast for the eyes.
The brainchild of creative talent Abigail Bisogno, The Yard houses a restaurant, bar, coffee shop, and lifestyle store with a beautifully curated selection of mostly local ceramics, jewelry, and accessories. Inspired by Abigail’s travels to India, the menus offer a fusion of Indian and Mediterranean flavors.
We visited on a Friday evening and ventured straight into spice territory. The Bo Kaap High Tea samosas, spinach, onion pakora, and seasonal chutneys were packed with flavor and perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The Karoo Lamb, with biryani-style risotto, sautéed spinach, crispy kale, curry-leaf pesto, Indian dukkah, and fried shallot, was a standout dish. The Cape Sustainable Fish (tuna), with tandoori cauliflower, roasted cauliflower puree, toasted almonds, and fried shallot, was just as delicious. If you prefer a good old-fashioned burger, you can’t go wrong with the grass-fed beef patty and all the trimmings – burnt onion aioli, tomato, Spanish onion, local cheddar, pickles with fries, or a house salad.
However, some visitors complained about the service, with long wait times and unorganized staff. Some also found that the food could have been better. Despite this, The Yard remains a popular venue for breakfast, cocktails, lunch, dinner, and brunch. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible and offers outdoor seating for those who prefer to enjoy the fresh air.
In summary, The Yard is a multifaceted experience that caters to all types of visitors. Its buzzy location in the art-drenched Silo District makes it a wonderful place to linger before or after your cultural escapades. So come for the curated shopping, and stay for the delicious fusion cuisine and cocktails.
