Located in the heart of South Africa, a young fervent environmental advocate, Romario Valentine, is making remarkable strides. This youthful bird enthusiast is known as the youngest representative for Ocean Sole and has had the honour of representing South Africa at a United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
Romario Valentine’s environmental advocacy journey started when he was merely six years old. At such a young age, he was intensely engaged in various conservation projects, initiatives to clean beaches, and tree planting activities. His relentless commitment to the environment has earned him a spotlight on the international stage, where his efforts are gaining recognition and making an impact.
Romario’s environmental dedication went beyond his community. He took up the role of an ambassador for Ocean Sole, a Kenyan enterprise that revolutionizes recycling by reusing washed-up flip-flops. This ingenious solution to a prevalent problem has caught the attention of renowned global platforms such as 50/50, National Geographic Kids, and Global Citizen.
Impressively, Romario has successfully raised over R76,000 for environmental causes on the crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy, from the age of eight. His campaigns cover a broad scope and have a global impact, with over 250 beach clean-up operations and encouraging the planting or sponsorship of over 455 trees in 31 countries worldwide.
Monique Weich, a Donor Coordinator at BackaBuddy, expresses her admiration for Romario, saying, “Romario Valentine’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation is inspiring. His fervor, backed by his donors’ steadfast support, has become a potent force for positive change.”
In September 2022, Romario expanded his portfolio by becoming a published author. His book, ‘Protect our Planet – Take Action with Romario,’ aims to spur the next wave of nature enthusiasts. The book explores critical environmental themes such as recycling, reforestation, pollution solutions, and climate change.
Recently, Romario revived his campaign to support BirdLife South Africa’s Mouse-free Marion Project. He is committed to preserving the essential seabirds on Marion Island, a sub-Antarctic location southeast of Cape Town. Marion Island plays a crucial role in the marine ecosystem; unfortunately, it is currently under threat from rodents that pose a significant danger to bird species.
The sealers and whalers who brought mice to the Island in the 19th century have caused a drastic reduction in albatrosses and petrels populations. The mice prey on the young seabirds, hindering their growth into adulthood. Additionally, adult birds face challenges from climate changes and human activities.
Romario’s previous Christmas campaign successfully sponsored 20 hectares on Marion Island. This year, he aims to raise R20,000 to sponsor an additional 20 hectares. The funds collected through his BackaBuddy campaign will contribute to supporting the 30,000-hectare Marion Island.
Romario’s message is universal, “When we take care of Nature, we take care of ourselves.” He invites everyone to join his environmental mission. His Seabirds Christmas Gift campaign will continue until the end of January 2023.
Romario Valentine exemplifies that age is not a barrier to making a positive change on our planet. His dedication to environmental conservation bears witness to his belief that every action, no matter how small, can contribute to the preservation of our planet.
