Unlocking the Potential of Urban Planning and Design: A Look into Cape Town’s Future

On July 28, 2023, the City of Cape Town embarked on an exciting journey to inspire and educate the next generation of urban planners, architects, and designers. The Urban Planning and Design Expo kicked off, featuring a career day for high schoolers from a variety of institutions. This initiative provided a platform for students to explore urban planning and design, as well as bursary, internship, and job-shadowing opportunities that the City offers.

The Expo

The exhibition ran until August 2, showcasing the City’s multiple projects and planning initiatives aimed at accommodating future population growth and sustainable development. The event successfully attracted ambitious high schoolers, eager to meet professionals and learn about various career opportunities in the sector.

Empowering Future Professionals

The exposition empowers young minds with knowledge and information to make informed decisions about their future. The City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, expressed his encouragement in seeing the interest and enthusiasm of the high schoolers.

Informing Residents and Professionals

The event provided an opportunity for residents to learn more about the City’s Spatial Planning and Urban Design Department’s role in influencing the built environment in Cape Town. Informative posters and videos about completed, current, and future projects were displayed, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the department’s efforts.

Demystifying the work behind urban planning and design is crucial in making residents and professionals understand how Cape Town is managing population growth and facilitating development.
