Tragic Accident at Msikaba Bridge Claims Life of Dedicated Worker

The Msikaba Bridge project experienced a somber atmosphere as the Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, expressed her deep sorrow regarding the recent fatal accident at the construction site. The accident occurred on May 5th at 11:00 am, at the South Main Batch Plant in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, resulting in the loss of a worker who was committed to ensuring the project’s successful completion.

A Dedicated Worker

Chikunga emphasized the worker’s dedication and service to the Eastern Cape people, acknowledging that his contributions will remain an essential part of the Msikaba Bridge’s history. The worker’s death occurred following the minister’s oversight visit to the site on April 28th, 2023. The bridge is part of the N2 Wild Coast SANRAL expansion between Port St. Johns and Port Edward.

Investigation

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) informed Chikunga that the cause of the accident is under investigation by the Joint Venture Partners of the project and the police. Previously, the site had a record of exemplary safety, boasting over 3.5 million loss time injury-free hours before this unfortunate incident.

Condolences

The Minister expressed her heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the Lusikisiki community, acknowledging that the entire project team shares their mourning. Chikunga encouraged the family to find solace in the support of their fellow community members, stressing that they are not alone in their loss.

The Msikaba Bridge Project

The Msikaba Bridge project is a highly anticipated development for the Eastern Cape region, expected to bring significant benefits to the local economy and connectivity of the area. The bridge is designed to be an impressive 580 meters long, making it the longest cable-stayed bridge in Africa upon completion. The N2 Wild Coast SANRAL expansion project aims to improve road infrastructure and promote economic growth throughout the region.

Workplace Safety

The tragic accident at the Msikaba Bridge project emphasizes the importance of workplace safety and adherence to proper procedures and guidelines. Construction sites can pose many hazards and risks, making it essential for all involved parties to prioritize the well-being of workers.

Investigation and Prevention

The Joint Venture Partners and the police are working together to ensure a thorough investigation takes place, aiming to identify the cause of the accident and prevent any future incidents from occurring. It is essential to learn from this tragedy and implement necessary changes to further improve safety standards at the construction site.

As the Lusikisiki community and the project team grieve the loss of a dedicated worker, it is essential for the construction industry to continually strive for the highest levels of safety and support for its workers. The successful completion of the Msikaba Bridge will stand as a testament to the hard work and dedication of all those involved, including the worker who tragically lost his life in pursuit of its construction.
