Second Incident

In the second incident, a Sergeant attached to the Public Order Police (POP) unit in East London was shot and killed while responding to an armed robbery at the Fidelity premises. A group of suspects is still at large, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend them.

National Commissioner’s Response

The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, has condemned both incidents and expressed his condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen police officers. He has ordered the mobilization of resources to apprehend those responsible for the death of the Sergeant in East London. General Masemola also praised the swift response of the Anti-Gang unit in apprehending the suspect in the Motherwell incident.

Mourning the Loss

The SAPS has lost two of its brave members, who gave their lives defending the country. The identities of the members have been withheld until their next of kin have been informed. The SAPS flag flies with the last breath of every member who died defending it. May their souls rest in peace.

Addressing Violence in South Africa

South Africa has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world, with an average of 58 murders per day. The SAPS has been working to address this issue by prioritizing the acquisition of additional resources and equipment to heighten the police response to fight serious and violent crimes. However, more needs to be done to ensure the safety of police officers and the citizens they serve.

The deaths of two SAPS members in Eastern Cape are a tragic loss for the country. However, the swift response by the Anti-Gang unit in apprehending one suspect is a testament to the determination of the SAPS to fight serious and violent crimes. The SAPS must continue to prioritize the safety of its members and the citizens they serve by providing them with the necessary resources and equipment to carry out their duties effectively.
