Tribute to Joe Mpisi: Champion for Education and Social Justice

Joe Mpisi, a distinguished leader and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Education, recently passed away, leaving a legacy of tireless dedication to education and social justice in South Africa. Early Life and Activism

Born into a working-class family, Joe Mpisi became a student activist at age 16, joining the United Democratic Front (UDF), the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM), and the African National Congress (ANC) in their fight against apartheid. He later joined the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP), earning leadership positions in Gauteng Province as Provincial Chairperson.

Career in the Legislature

As an MPL, Mpisi was appointed to the Portfolio Committee on Education in 2014, later chairing the Portfolio Committee on Finance before returning to Education. He held the Department of Education accountable for providing quality education to Gauteng learners and was known for his integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to social change.

Joe Mpisi’s activism emerged during apartheid, driven by a desire to challenge discrimination and inequality.
