Section 1: Effective Collaboration and Impressive Results

The battle against crime in South Africa has made a remarkable stride forward with the achievements of Operation Shanela. This intensive, intelligence-driven initiative was carried out in high-crime areas throughout the Northern Cape Province. The combined efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS), additional law enforcement agencies, and community organizations have been crucial in making sure those who break the law are held accountable.

Operation Shanela’s wide-ranging efforts took place over four days, from October 5th to 8th, 2023. The operation involved vehicle checkpoints, searches, blue light and foot patrols, compliance inspections, and detectives tracking down wanted suspects throughout the province. Consequently, 124 suspects were apprehended, along with 137 daily wanted suspects who had been eluding police for committing various offenses.

Section 2: Noteworthy Accomplishments of the Operation

One of the major successes of the operation was the arrest of two men, aged 28 and 36, for having stolen property worth R43,000. The Kimberley Crime Prevention Unit was informed about a tuckshop selling bulk branded goods that belonged to a nearby supermarket. The police acted swiftly on the tip, leading to the suspects being apprehended.

In another case, police in Delportshoop recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested a 62-year-old man for vehicle theft. A tracking company alerted the authorities about a stolen car parked near Ulco mine. The timely response from law enforcement resulted in the recovery of the vehicle and the suspect’s arrest.

Additionally, two male suspects, aged 37 and 40, were arrested and charged under the Northern Cape Nature Conservation Act 9/2009 sec 50 & 51 for illegally possessing endangered plants. Police stopped a white Isuzu Double Cab bakkie on the R382 road between Steinkopf and Port Nolloth and discovered ten 50kg bags containing 4485 Conophytum Bilobum plants. The Isuzu bakkie was also seized, as it was reportedly used in the crime.

Section 3: Broad Success and Gratitude for Cooperation

The operation also succeeded in seizing and recovering various items such as alcoholic beverages, dangerous weapons, and drugs, including crystal meth, dagga mandrax, and tik. A total of 56 compliance inspections were carried out at second-hand dealers, liquor stores, formal and informal businesses, farms, and mines.

Law enforcement set up roadblocks across the province, with 25 vehicle checkpoints and eight roadblocks resulting in 1631 vehicles being stopped and searched, and 4637 people searched. Moreover, the police conducted routine visits to ATMs, business premises, National Key Points, post offices, and tuckshops.

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, expressed her appreciation to all SAPS personnel and other law enforcement agencies for their joint effort in confronting and dealing decisively with those who break the law. She also recognized the essential support of community organizations in the fight against crime.

The successful collaboration of law enforcement agencies, the government, and community organizations has made Operation Shanela a beacon of hope for the people of the Northern Cape Province.
