To cater to those without direct internet access, the Department of Employment and Labour has introduced a free USSD service. Dialing 134843# on any mobile phone enables clients to check their UIF status. This innovative service requires only an active mobile number, making it accessible to a broader range of users.
The Department of Employment and Labour has launched UIF mobile buses to assist clients in deep rural areas who cannot visit labour centres in their nearest towns. This initiative aims to make UIF services more accessible to those in remote locations. According to UIF Commissioner Teboho Maruping, these mobile units are part of the Department’s efforts to make service delivery more convenient.
To improve internet accessibility, the Department has installed free Wi-Fi at all labour centres. This initiative allows clients to use the online system with ease when visiting UIF offices. Additionally, the Department has appointed 3,000 marshals and officials to assist clients with online applications, ensuring a smooth and convenient experience for users.
The online system is designed to give total control to the applicant. This approach empowers applicants to take charge of every step of the application process, addressing issues of incorrect documentation and fraud. Moreover, applicants can maintain the safety of their documents once submitted online.
The Department aspires to revolutionize the way UIF operates as a fund, leveraging technology to eventually eliminate the need for office visits. This innovative approach is still a work in progress, with continuous improvement being the ultimate goal.
In the future, the Department plans to introduce an employer-driven process, allowing employers or organized labour to apply on behalf of their employees. This initiative aims to streamline the UIF application process further and improve service delivery for a better customer experience.
