Unleashing Canine Justice: Overstrand, Swartland, and Mossel Bay K-9 and Rural Safety Units in Action

In the Western Cape, crime-fighting efforts by the Overstrand and Swartland Rural Safety Units have been boosted by the Mossel Bay K-9 unit. Together, these units have successfully apprehended a number of criminals across the regions. In just a span of thirteen days, from August 15th to the 27th, 2023, the collaboration of these units, along with assistance from municipal law enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service (SAPS), has led to the arrest of thirty-two individuals. Sixteen arrests were made in the Overstrand municipality, five in Mossel Bay, and eleven in Swartland.

Mossel Bay K-9 Unit’s Progress

Though it has yet to be officially launched, the Mossel Bay K-9 unit has made significant progress in its operations. The unit has already arrested five individuals, one of whom has been charged with housebreaking. Additionally, the unit has confiscated a large number of electrical wires and cables.

Malmesbury and Porterville Arrests

In Swartland’s Malmesbury and Porterville areas, various offenses resulted in multiple arrests. The units arrested three individuals for drug dealing, three for drug possession, and two for possession of dangerous weapons. During these operations, several items were seized, including two mandrax tablets, two half mandrax tablets, three quarter mandrax tablets, twenty-four small zipper bags containing tik, and large quantities of liquor.

Overstrand Arrests and Confiscated Items

The Overstrand units also made several arrests, including one for possession of a dangerous weapon, two for possession of abalone, and five for wanted suspects. Along with these arrests, the unit seized 461 units of abalone, valued at R 86,233.00. Diving equipment, such as flippers and a pouch bag, was also seized, along with stolen equipment like a flatscreen TV, remote, knife, diving booties, screwdrivers, caps, gloves, four cellphones, and memory sticks.

Appreciation for the Units

Marcellino Martin, spokesperson for the Western Cape MEC of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, expressed his appreciation for the hard work of the K-9 and Rural Safety units. Martin emphasized the importance of bringing criminals and their illegal activities to their knees, while also working towards the goal of halving the murder rate by 2029. At the end of the day, Martin emphasized that the ultimate aim is for all Western Cape residents to live in dignity, peace, and without fear.
