Unprecedented High-Density Operation Shanela in Free State Province: Over 1200 Arrests Secured

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State Province launched a high-density operation named “Operation Shanela” from June 18 to July 2, 2023. Multiple agencies coordinated their efforts in the operation to combat a wide range of criminal activities.

Tackling a Range of Criminal Activities

The operation aimed to address prevalent criminal activities such as possession of illicit firearms, murder, rape, car and truck hijacking, robberies, cash-in-transit robberies, tracing of wanted suspects, gender-based violence, femicide, damage to infrastructure, and stock theft. It employed tracing activities and high-density patrols to achieve its objectives.

Impressive Outcome of Operation Shanela

During the two-week operation, the police searched over 10,000 individuals and scrutinized 4,820 vehicles. The operation resulted in the arrest of 1,248 suspects for various crimes. The police apprehended 46 individuals for possessing dangerous weapons, eight for carrying unlicensed firearms and live ammunition, 18 for drug dealing, 267 for assault, 17 for aggravated robberies, and 62 for burglaries. Additionally, the police apprehended three suspects for car hijacking, seven for rape, three for murder, and seven for attempted murder.

Successful Arrest of Wanted Suspects

The police executed issued arrest warrants for various crimes and arrested 402 wanted suspects, contributing to the operation’s success. The police also conducted compliance visits to secondhand goods stores and scrapyards, leading to many arrests. Additionally, 85 undocumented individuals were taken into custody during the operation.

Confiscation of Illicit Substances

Operation Shanela resulted in the confiscation of various illicit substances such as nyaope, crystal meth, and Mandrax. The operation also led to the recovery of two stolen vehicles, and the suspects behind these thefts were arrested.

Rural Areas Safety Operations

The operation also extended to rural areas in the Free State Province, with increased rural safety operations and farm patrols intensified. The police also carried out stop-and-search activities on suspicious vehicles and individuals.

Multi-Agency Collaboration for a Safer Environment

The success of Operation Shanela demonstrates the power of multi-agency collaboration in combating crime and creating a safer environment. The operation sends a strong message to criminals and would-be offenders, showing that the SAPS, along with its partners, stands ready to take bold and decisive action to maintain order and protect the people of the Free State Province.

The Free State Province plans to build on the success of Operation Shanela by continuing with numerous roadblocks, stop-and-search initiatives, and increased police visibility in crime hotspot areas.
