The 2023 #YouthStart Entrepreneurial Challenge celebrated the success of South Africa’s young entrepreneurs in a grand awards ceremony. The competition, organized by the City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development (SDECD) Department, provided a platform for both established businesses and emerging visionaries with innovative ideas to showcase their talent and tenacity.
Alderman Andrews, speaking at the ceremony, emphasized the government’s role as a major employer and the importance of a thriving youthful entrepreneurial sector. He encouraged all participants to continue pursuing their dreams, regardless of whether they won a prize.
This year’s competition featured multiple categories with winners emerging from different industries. Justin Gelderbloem of JDG Events in Brackenfell won the top prize in the existing businesses category, followed by Tumeleng Mampi of Ikasi’lam Eatery and Car Wash in Gugulethu, and Gugu Tyhaliti of Cake Talk Bakery in Khayelitsha.
Other category winners included Xola Kondlo from Philippi East in Manufacturing, Amkele Nokrala from Philippi East in Agriculture, Viwe Tobi from Langa in Finance & Business Services, Zikhona Malgas from Philippi in Information Technology (IT), and Faizel Newman from Bonteheuwel in Tourism.
The 2023 challenge received 162 entries across various categories. Participants underwent intensive training before presenting their pitches to an adjudication panel. Finalists in the existing businesses category were also subjected to site visits as part of the verification process.
Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, expressed gratitude to all participants and sponsors for their contribution to this remarkable initiative. She lauded the SDECD team for facilitating opportunities for the participants.
The 2023 #YouthStart Entrepreneurial Challenge highlighted the innovative and vibrant spirit of South Africa’s youth. As these young entrepreneurs continue to push the boundaries, they not only contribute to the nation’s shared future but also inspire countless others to pursue their dreams.
The 2023 #YouthStart Entrepreneurial Challenge winners have set the stage for an increasingly dynamic entrepreneurial landscape and have proven that age is no barrier to success. As the next generation of business leaders, their achievements serve as a testament to the power of a dream, the importance of hard work, and the unstoppable spirit of South Africa’s youth.
